Drugless Back Pain Treatments

Drugless Back Pain Treatments

Back pain is one of the most frequent complaints; approximately 90 % of adults experience back pain at some point in their lives. In rare cases back pain can be caused by cancer, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis or a herniated disc in the spinal column. However, most cases of back pain are caused by functional and postural imbalances due to the involvement of muscles, fascia and ligaments, generally referred to as soft tissues. Prolonged sitting at the desk and computer, lifting heavy objects without proper technique, or repetitive movements can all contribute to back stiffness and eventually pain.

Massage Therapy combined with Acupuncture and Exercise Programs can reduce the level and frequency of back pain.

Here is a brief description of what to expect during your treatment:

The treatment usually starts with a moist heat application, followed with gentle stretching (myofascial release) of the back and leg muscles, and massage. The session may also include acupuncture, which involves the insertion of small sterile needles along the spine, as well as in the buttock and leg muscles. To achieve stronger stimulation, the needles are left for 15 to 20 minutes.

Acupuncture and massage are great tools in managing back pain by stimulating blood circulation, releasing muscle spasms and increasing levels of natural pain killers.

In order to provide extended soft tissue manipulation and improve blood and lymph circulation, a special tape (Kinesiotape) is applied to the back muscles. This tape provides support without restricting the body’s movement and is effective for 4-5 days.

At the end of the treatment a program of stretching and strengthening exercises, tailored to the patient’s needs, is given as home care.

Cranial Sacral Therapy

Last weekend Kathleen took a Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST) Course. During the course she learned the basics of CST, and can now incorporate them with Massage Therapy to help improve overall health.

History of CST: At the start of the 1900’s, an osteopathy student, William Sutherland, who was taught that our cranial bones were fused together and did not move, had discovered, during examining a set of cranial bones, that the cranial bones were easily separated and the sutures (joints) looked like the gills of a fish. So Dr. Sutherland started experimenting with his own skull to try and prove that what he was taught was right. During his experiments he discovered that the cranial bones do in fact move, and therefore can be manipulated. While assisting a neurosurgeon in the removal of a plaque on the spinal cord membrane of a patient, Dr. John Upledger noticed a pulsating that was slower than cardiac pulse and respiratory pulse, and is known now as craniosacral rhythm. Dr. Upledger then further developed Dr. Sutherland’s observations and incorporated them into his treatments, he now calls Craniosacral Therapy.

What is CST: Cranial Sacral Therapy is a gentle, manual therapy that helps release deep tension throughout the body that causes pain and dysfunction in turn improving whole body health. By using a very light touch (no greater than the weight of a nickel) Practitioners can release restrictions in the soft tissues surrounding the central nervous system.

What to except during a CST treatment: The therapist places the hands lightly on the body and tunes into the Cranial Sacral system to release restrictions. The client may feel a sense of relaxation or light headedness, or may feel nothing at all.

So drop by the clinic and try some Cranial Sacral Therapy with Kathleen.

Spring Cleaning your Body & Mind

Spring is here with a sense of renewal and rejuvenation. While winter was a season of eating heavy foods and conserving energy, spring is a time of action, movement and a lighter diet. In just a few weeks we will be cleaning our yards, houses and cottages. During this busy time let’s not forget our bodies and mind as according to Chinese physiology, seasonal changes can affect your well being and health.

Based on Eastern philosophy, spring corresponds to the “Wood” element which in turn is related to the liver and the gallbladder. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the liver is responsible for the smooth flow of energy (Qi) throughout the body and therefore it is the prime target for spring cleansing. Green is the colour of the liver and of spring. Thus, eating greens like lettuce, green beans, sprouts, spinach, and arugula, can improve liver functions. The liver can also be stimulated with sour drinks and foods such as putting a slice of lemon in your water or a touch of vinegar in salad dressing. The liver has an effect on tendons, muscles and nerves. Therefore, adding morning stretches to your daily routine will benefit them and will make you feel better. The liver also opens to the eyes and is connected to proper eye function.

About 70% of our body is made-up of water. Drinking about 8 glasses of clean water a day will not only hydrate your body but it will also help with cleansing. And to strengthen the cleansing effect, add liquid chlorophyll to your drinking water. This liquid supplement is available for sale at the retail section of our clinic.

If you want to improve your cleansing program even more, you should exclude any processed and fast food as well as dairy products from your diet as processed food is full of salt, sugar (or sugar substitutes) and preservatives, and dairy products can lead to the accumulation of mucus in the body (if you have weak digestion or lactose intolerance). Switching completely or partially to organic foods will also support the detoxification process by limiting the input of new toxins and chemicals from your diet.

Your cleansing program would also benefit from using a sauna, therapeutic massage and acupuncture.

Regular sauna visits will provide deep and total body cleansing as well as relaxation and will give you younger looking skin. In addition, saunas have a balancing effect on the psyche and emotions. To view tips on how to have a perfect sauna session go to our Blog.

Booking a massage therapy session during your cleansing program can be very beneficial to the detoxification process as this type of therapy stimulates blood and lymph circulation through the body.

Complementing your spring cleaning with acupuncture treatments can give you additional improvements in overall health and well-being. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes in the presence of 12 primary pathways (meridians) distributed throughout the body, most acupuncture points being located along these meridians. Needling points located on the liver and gallbladder meridian can improve the health of the liver as well as of related organs.

Don’t forget to exercise daily, especially outdoors. Jogging or walking, biking, Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates are all great choices. Bouncing on a trampoline is believed to stimulate lymphatic flow extremely well and to help with detoxification, however make sure you know how to use the equipment safely.

How to have a Perfect Sauna Session!

  1. Have a light meal before you go to the sauna.
2.      Remove your clothes and jewellery. In North American public saunas it is customary to wear a bathing suit, check with your facility regarding proper sauna attire.

3.      Shower with warm water and soap and then dry yourself off.

4.      Dry brush your whole body to promote faster sweating.

5.      Enter the sauna slowly and close the door behind you.

6.      Step slowly onto the first level bench and lie down on your towel. Your head should be slightly elevated on the wooden headrest. Your whole body should be on the same level. Stay in the sauna for about 10 minutes.

7.      Get up slowly. First lower your feet to the level below and do a few foot pumping exercises, then leave the sauna.

8.      Breath fresh air, walk a bit and apply cold water from your feet upwards using a hose or shower. Rinse your face and head. After using the shower you may immerse yourself in a tub of cold water for a total cool down (if available). Have a resting period

9.      After your rest, go back into the sauna and lay down on the second level bench. Repeat steps 6, 7 and 8.

10.  Experienced sauna users may repeat steps 6, 7 and 8 one more time.

11.  After your last sauna session, cool down completely, apply lotion to your skin and replenish lost fluid. Good choices are mineral or spring water, fruit juices or vegetable juices.

12.  A massage would be very beneficial after the sauna as your muscles are soft and relaxed and in perfect shape for it.

13.  Rest, meditate and take time to wind down.

14.  Get dressed in clean clothes and have a light meal.

A sauna session can last between two and three hours and its effects on the body may last for about seven days. So set aside the same time every week to go to the sauna.
