Hot Stone Massage

Rock On!!!
With Hot Stone Massage
By Jolanta Kurz

Now that the hot summer months are almost over you may want to explore the benefits of a thermotherapy known as a hot stone massage.

Hot stone massage evolved from traditional use of stones in Native American and Japanese cultures and is one of the fastest growing massage techniques in today's spas.

Black basalt stones, made by volcanic action, are used in this modality. They are derived from magma which originates at earth depths where the temperature is high enough and the pressure low enough that the rock can melt. The magnesium and iron rich magmas produce basalt at the sea floor of many volcanoes. Wave action and currents of the sea craft basalt stones. Their texture is so fine that individual minerals are rarely seen. Basalt can vary from dark grey with a bit of green to almost black. The basalt stones have excellent heat and cold retention properties and therfore are used in stone massage.

Before the treatment the stones are warmed up in hot salt water, placed on the body and also used to perform massage techniques. The combination of the energy from warm stones and massage work gives amazing results. Hot stone massage induces deep relaxation, helps with detoxification, melts tension and alleviates pain. Warm stones applied to the body increase the heart and respiation rate, as well as flexibility due to a melting effect on the connective tissue. Vasodilation of capillaries caused by heat application brings blood rich nutrients and oxygen to the area and helps with the healing process.

Cold stones can also be incorporated into the treatment. Cold has a decongestive effect, decreases inflammation and reduces pain.

Semiprecious crystals can also be placed on the energetic centers of the body (chakras).

The Stone Therapy goes beyond the physical experience of the typical massage; it brings harmony and positive energy flow. It can be a great addition to your health and wellness program.
